Empower your Learners for Remote Learning Success
The COVID-19 crisis has created new challenges for students as they transition to learning outside of the classroom. And while we have yet to see great increases in dropout rates or lower attainment, we know that students have significant vulnerabilities that might impact their advancement in the very near future.
These vulnerabilities often come in the form of life skills. According to a new study, millennial students entering college demonstrate significant gaps in basic life skills, like time management, budgeting and independent study. These skills are necessary to effectively navigate the world of college, and without them, students exhibit lower levels of confidence, increased anxiety disorders and higher dropout rates.
To address these life skill shortages, four-year universities, community colleges and vocational schools alike have placed increased emphasis on academic advising, student services and soft-skill building to support students who come to post secondary education under-prepared and find themselves overwhelmed by its rigors. And as a result of these efforts, researchers have seen upticks in persistence. A recent report from the Center for Community College Student Engagement shows that effective advising can impact on student retention and thus college graduation rates.
But what happens when these resources are overwhelmed or unavailable? As more campuses close in response to Covid-19, and students become further removed from the supportive services that are designed to help move them toward graduation, the challenges of learning remotely will start to sink in. For example, imagine how challenging it will be for a student who struggles with time management to stay on top of electronic coursework – that’s often much more flexible – without the structure of the classroom to guide them. Similarly, think about how a student who struggles with problem solving might be hamstrung and demotivated by the technical difficulties that are bound to arise within the remote learning environment. And while we haven’t seen the impact of these challenges on attainment and graduation yet, without preemptive action, we most likely will.
Students – especially those who were already struggling – need support adjusting to the new normal brought about by COVID-19. And, like dealing with the virus itself, academic institutions shouldn’t wait for this problem to completely manifest itself before they begin addressing it.
For those schools that are reaching out to us preemptively, we’ve put together a short course to help students increase their success and confidence, called Remote Learning Success. This course helps students gain the critical know-how to not just survive in the remote learning environment, but to thrive in it. Remote Learning Success covers key fundamental skills like:
- Time management
- Goal setting
- Note-taking
- Problem solving
- Budgeting
- Applying emotional intelligence
- Strategies for staying emotionally and mentally healthy
These are proactive tools in the fight to keep students engaged and on track academically, and our personalized, Adaptive 3.0 learning platform ensures that students not only master the information but that they’ll also be able apply it in the real world.
Our Remote Learning Success Courses are:
Flexible – All students need to use our Remote Learning Success Courses is a simple Internet connection. Each section can be accessed via desktop, laptop, tablets and mobile. Our platform is web-based, so there’s no app that learners have to download.
Ready To Launch – Remote Learning Success Courses are ready-to-launch and instantly scalable. Fulcrum can quickly spin up and launch this for as many students as needed.
Powered by AI – Fulcrum’s Adaptive 3.0 Learning Platform that leverages:
- Behavior & Knowledge Mapping (BKM™) to adjust learning content, hints, feedback and recommendations in real time. As a result, the platform is able to effectively mimic and scale the one-on-one learning experience – dramatically improving the amount of content that’s mastered, remembered and accurately applied.
- Optimal Challenge to dial content to the precise level of difficulty that’s best for each individual learner based on his or her performance and confidence. Optimal challenge ensures that students don’t get discouraged by content that’s too difficult or bored by content that’s too easy, rather they’re continually challenged and remain engaged throughout the course.
- A competency-based, microlearning framework that allows learners go at their own pace, mastering one microlearning Section (typically 1-4 learning objectives) at a time and building a strong framework of knowledge and confidence.
- Learner autonomy over how they want to learn and the ability and tools to self-remediate weak areas identified by the platform’s AI. Research shows, learners who have more autonomy demonstrate higher rates of engagement and satisfaction.
With preemptive action, we can help provide students with the foundational skills they need to succeed as remote learners during this COVID-19 challenge and beyond. If you’re interested in learning more, reach out directly by phone (801) 251-6840 or email us at info@fulcrumlabs.ai.
